Treating animals well is not only the right thing to do, it makes for much better ham!  Here is an article from The Atlantic magazine reporting on how free-range, acorn fed Ibérico pigs are treated humanely, and how that translates into excellennt quality ham.  The author suggests that the rest of the meat industry could learn a thing or two about how to treat animals.
